Chapter One: Eff You, Effie!
1. I don’t know why the song is credited as “by The Fugees” when Lauryn Hill does all the heavy lifting, but I digress.
2. On top of not being allowed to take the car out of state per my lease agreement, I didn’t have a job for some time in LA and couldn’t afford to pay the bill so it was promptly repossessed.
3. To call these head shots unflattering would be an understatement.
4. It was basically 365 coupons for a free meal at the Bell, and a bitch was broke so I used every last one of ’em. My go-to meal was three tacos with lettuce, extra cheese, sour cream, and a shitload of mild hot sauce and a raspberry iced tea.
5. $5.15/Hour is where I met my friend America Ferrera, TV’s Ugly Betty. We spent a little over two weeks shooting the pilot in Austin. It was written by Rodney Rothman and directed by Richard Linklater. It was a great time and we were all sad it didn’t make it onto the HBO schedule.
6. I’m dating myself by naming these old-ass dances but I feel y’all need to KNOW. I was doin’ the damn thing.
7. Full disclosure: She did wear medium heels in some group scenes but the scene where she sang “And I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going,” the Oscar-winning scene, homegirl had on flats.
