33. While Bowen and his colleagues have used the word “differentiation” as a major concept in their theory and their work, Bowen himself never fully explained the term. He did say that poorly differentiated people have a high percentage of life problems, such as physical and emotional illness, social maladaption and failures. Well-differentiated people’s thinking and feeling functions are more differentiated and autonomous; they have fewer life problems, are more successful in life, have more energy to devote to their own life courses, and their relationships are more free and intimate. Basic level or differentiation describes, among other things, functioning that is not dependent on the emotionally driven process of being in a relationship. Although he had initially hoped that the general population would be distributed evenly over a scale of poorly to well differentiated people, he concluded that about 90 percent of them were in the lower end and perhaps 10 percent of them were well-differentiated. My (CW) sense is that Bowen’s idea of “well differentiated” is nearly the same as “self-actualized” and close to what we would call being in an advanced level of Stage Two recovery.

38. We are here referring more to a level of consciousness than the historical figure.
39. I (BW) am referring here to my near-death experience. I had a life review in which I was able to see and experience my life over again. In that review I was able to experience everything that others felt, so that in a strange but awesome way, I was not only me—I was them, too. And God was also showing me all this through God’s eyes.
