Chapter 17

ELIZABETH ROOM

The Elizabeth room is one of two rooms facing the front lawn and the cemetery across the street. It is also next to the upper deck, which is an outdoor living room. This room did not have the same level of activity that the Adelaide and Collette rooms had up until September of 2015, when the spirits began to gather. (I write about this in Chapter 21, “The Gathering.”) Now things seem to be happening on a regular basis.

From the beginning of Captain Grant’s, the Elizabeth room has been the favorite of guests. It is a bit smaller than the other rooms, but that doesn’t seem to matter. It has a four-poster canopy cherry bed that my husband handcrafted. The one comment that we repeatedly get from guests is, “We were so comfortable. It felt like home.” I have heard that comment hundreds of times. I believe that the spirits in the home take care of our guests. The spirits have told me, in our conversations, that they like having guests in the home.

Up until 2012, the only experiences recorded by guests in the Elizabeth room were sounds they would hear coming from the hallway. After September 2015, some of the most unusual happenings occurred in this room. They were not recorded in the room’s diary.

Now enjoy the telling of the stories in this room.

Thanks Ted and Carol

We had an incredible time looking for ghosts! Caught the voices of what sounded like a small child singing outside this room. We’ll let you know anything else we find when we review the tapes.

—Ghost Hunters

(Carol: Many of our guests in the Elizabeth and Adelaide rooms have heard this child. It is a girl and I suspect that it is Deborah Adams.)

We did have one encounter—My wife & I both clearly heard the voice of a young child say, “Ma.” No one was around.

I had a amazing stay at this B&B. I heard a little girl’s voice laughing in our room and footsteps in the night. Be back soon.

I admit I am a bit of a skeptic but open minded so I decided to record an experience on the last night of our stay. Let reader be the judge or interpreter of the happening. Not much really, just a poke in the nose.

At 1:30 am I was in half sleep after about 3 hours of sound sleep. Lying on my back, my wife asleep and facing the opposite wall. My arms and hands were under the covers, when I felt 3 taps on the nose. On my left nostril hard enough to close the nostril but soft enough not to move my head. If only once, I may have dismissed it but 3 times brought an awareness not to be denied because I was fully awake by the second tap. No sounds were heard. I got up and looked around the room and all was quiet. At times I do hold my breath in my sleep but I have never felt anything like this sensation. It was what it was. Did a ghost save my life?

We enjoyed every second being here. We were thrilled to have some personal experiences with the spirits of Captain Grant’s 1754 as well. It was quite thrilling to be the only guests in the house for the last few nights, making the unexplained noise, well, unexplained. We did hear walking about above us in the early morning. I heard the name Sarah spoken to me outside on my way to the cemetery. Our biggest thrill was in the game room last night where it was very cold when the rest of the house was hot and both heard a woman’s voice at the same time.

—Highland Lakes, New York

(Carol: The game room has a separate heating system, so that might have caused the temperature difference. The name Sarah has been mentioned to me several times by guests, but I have yet to have a conversation with her. The walking in the attic occurs around 4:00 to 5:00 a.m., though that can vary some. At one time this male spirit’s voice was heard only in the Adelaide room, but now it is heard in all second-floor rooms. I believe this spirit is Daniel.)

We loved our room & the great breakfast. Our experiences in our room were a knock & jiggle of the door handle yet no one was in the hall … Seems like the ghosts are friendly yet mischievous.

—A family of five

(Carol: This is where I want to point out the time separation of sightings in this room. The previous sighting was on November 25, 2012, and the next one was on November 27, 2015.)

The midnight walk through the cemetery in the back was fascinating and spooky. We heard footsteps in the hall our last night here! Thought we saw people in our room at night! And even had a vitamin move on a table when our back was turned. Yikes!!
