Energizing Blessing
Raising the Sparks in Food
The Ari taught that the prime path of enlightenment is through the conscious blessing of food.94 Blessing food is a mindfulness practice. It forces you to pause and be conscious of what you are about to eat, even if you are very hungry and find it hard to resist tasting that first bite.
All food is a union of heaven and earth, and Hebrew blessings reflect this idea. Food is light energy from the sun transformed by the earth through photosynthesis and the food chain. When we eat, the light becomes renewed within us. Heaven and earth unite in us through the process of assimilation. In Kabbalah, when food is blessed, the divine sparks in food, which is physical, are elevated to the level of the spiritual and eating becomes sacred.95 Every cell in our bodies is nourished and sustained by the energy of food that is blessed.
Rabbi Moshe ben Aderet, in the 1200s, wrote that acknowledging God as the source of blessing draws divine energy into the world. Blessing food helps to release and elevate concealed divine sparks in the physical world and at the same time draws divine energy down to us.
Blessings provide a verbal formula for repairing the world through the balance of opposites and divine marriage. As you may recall, all Hebrew blessings in the kabbalistic tradition, begin with the intention, “for the sake of the unification of the masculine divine principle/Kadosh Baruch Hu with the feminine divine principle/Shechina.”96
Le’shem y’chud kudsha bri’chu u’shechinatay
Then the formal blessing begins with the phrase:
Blessed are You, God,
Baruch Atah YY,
YY/, pronounced Adonai, is also a unification of divine masculine and feminine, as in the combined name
YHVH/Adonai 97
Unification is the intention both at the beginning of a blessing and at the end. Examine the gematria:
At the beginning of a blessing:
The gematria of the combined name YHVH/ADONAI is:
YHVH |
= |
26 |
Adonai |
= |
65 |
total |
91 |
At the end: Those who hear a blessing reply, “Amen.”
The gematria of Amen is:
|
A |
Aleph |
= |
1 |
|
M |
Mem |
= |
40 |
|
N |
Nun |
= |
50 |
Total |
91 |
91 = 91
The gematria of Amen is equal to that of the combined Name.
The blessing is sealed with unification at the end when all who have heard the blessing say Amen.
Blessing acknowledges that nourishment of the physical body with the light energy of food is a divine unification and a sacred act from start to finish.
The Energy Component
In modern times, even the freshest organic produce may have been harvested days before it reaches us. Donna Eden, who clearly sees the energy in food, notes that processed and microwaved food has lost most of its vitality. Energizing and blessing food can restore the original energy our bodies need for maximum health. Donna often relates the story of one her students, a poor, sickly man who lived in a gas station and only ate from the vending machines. When Donna taught him the energy protocol below, and he started energizing the food in his very unhealthy diet, his vitality returned.98
In addition, foods testing “no” can be reversed to “yes” by the addition of an energy blessing.99
Energizing food can include the traditional Hebrew blessing for bread, the Motzi, or another blessing of your choice. The Motzi is offered over bread at the beginning of a meal and includes everything that will be eaten.
The Energy Motzi
A Hebrew blessing called the Motzi is traditionally offered at the beginning of any meal that includes bread. The energy Motzi combines this blessing with a method of revitalizing the energy in food, as taught to me by Donna Eden. The Motzi, its transliteration, and English translation are provided. Choose one or feel free to choose or compose an alternate that resonates with you.
For the sake of the unification of the K”BH and the Shechina
I recite the following:
l’shem yichud kudsha bri’chu u’shechinatey
Blessed are You, Adonai
Baruch atah adonai
Creator of the universe,
Eloheinu melech haolam
Say:
Who brings forth bread…
hamotzi lechem
Say:
…from the earth.
min haaretz
If it is your practice to verbalize a different prayer or grace of your choice, do so as you perform steps one through five, connecting your thoughts and intentions, through words, to the physical world.
94 Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan quoting Chaim Vital’s Sha’areh Kedusha in Meditation and Kabbalah, 227.
95 In The Hidden Messages in Water, Masaru Emoto shows the profound effects of blessing and love on water. Water is the main componant of both us and our food.
96 Refer to chapters 24 and 117. This phrase is in Aramaic, an earlier form of Hebrew.
97 Explained in chapter 8, “The Unpronounceable Name.”
98 Personal communication.
99 In my energy medicine classes we have performed an interesting experiment. We periodically test foods, such as dairy and gluten, to see what is compatible with our different energies. One day we tested an old piece of white bread, which tested negative for everyone. As a group we then blessed the bread in our own modalities. Applied kineseology testing showed that the bread no longer weakened anyone. We repeated the experiment on a different day with similar results. I have also observed the power of blessing food in my clients with food sensitivities.
