Archer’s COWL

Inspired by the Hunger Games trilogy, this quirky asymmetric cowl is ultra cosy and can easily be worn over a jacket. The super-chunky yarn works up into a rich dense fabric that holds the shape of this structured accessory.

Make it yours

For a truly bold style statement, work this design in a bright colour or a variegated yarn to show off the clever construction.

Tip

To create the ultra-cosy fabric of this accessory the yarn is held double throughout – take care to ensure you are catching both strands with the hook as you work.

FOR THE UPPER NECKLINE ON COLLAR

Re-join yarn in foundation ch at the collar.

Rounds 1–3: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end, join with a sl st in third ch of 3ch.

Fold the upper section of the collar over to the outside and pass the hook from the inside of the collar through the base of the tr sts, to work a sl st around each st to secure the rolled down section in place.

FOR THE FRONT SECTION

Foundation: With the yarn held double and 15mm or 16mm (US P/16) crochet hook, make 22ch. 1dc in second ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Place a locking stitch marker on stitches 2, 10, 12 and 20.

Row 1: 1ch, 1dc in each st to end working [1dc, 2ch, 1dc] in each of the marked sts, turn.

Rows 2–4: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end working [1tr, 2ch, 1tr] in each ch-sp, turn.

Row 5: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end working 1tr in each ch-sp and moving the markers up to these tr as you work them, turn.

Row 6: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end working [1tr, 2ch, 1tr] in each of the marked sts, turn.

Row 7: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end working 1tr in each ch-sp and moving the markers up to these tr as you work them, turn.

Row 8: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end working [1tr, 2ch, 1tr] in each of the marked sts.

Fasten off.

MAKING UP AND FINISHING

Position the short edge of the Front Section along the lower edge of the Yoke between the shaping over the shoulders, with the shorter side towards the right arm. With the Front Section positioned under the Yoke join with a sl st through each corresponding stitch to join the two sections together. Fasten off.

Repeat to secure the second short end of the Front Section to the back section of the Yoke in the same manner.

Weave in all loose ends and block to measurements.

Tip

Super-chunky yarns can be tricky to fit through the eye of a needle when weaving ends in – try using a split-eye needle, bodkin or small crochet hook to make it easier.
