Alice hauled him up there everyday for his radiation treatments. One hundred miles round trip—for 30 days. She didn’t charge him a penny for gas or wear and tear on her car and she didn’t complain. She was nice to dad. But if mom was too slow gettin’ ready, she would roar into the house, slammin’ doors and yellin’, “Don’t keep me waitin’, lady.” Mom would scramble to get her pocket book and trundle out after Alice, who did let her stop at Kmart once to get new glasses. The eye examiner checked her vision and said “any lens can be made for any frame, it only takes afew days.” Alice was too mean and impatient to let mom customize her eye ware. She made mom go on and get some awful old man pair that didn’t even fit her face . . . just kept slidin’ down her nose.
