Introduction

India has a vast variety of travel options, ranging in all kinds of natural as well as man-made wonders.  From arid deserts of Rajasthan to the snowy mountains of the Himalayas ; from the ancient Hindu rock-cut temples, to the Mughal Forts, and modern day skyscrapers of the Indian metropolises.  One can find it all in one country.

Travelling in Rajasthan forms a unique experience in that respect, not to be found anywhere else in the country (or in the world.)  The major attractions in the Indian state of Rajasthan include the vast Thar Desert as well as the Aravalli mountain ranges amongst the various forts, temples and palaces built in Rajput style f architecture.

The state of Rajasthan has a lot of places to offer different combinations of its heritage and its image, the most famous of them being explored around in this box-set series. (Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur )

Other places to visit in Rajasthan include Mount Abu, Ranthambore National Park, Ajmer, Pushkar, Bikaner, Alwar, Keoladeo National Park, Kota, Barmer, Bharatpur, Chittorgarh , etc. with each one of them offering further insights into the vast and rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan.  So pack your bags and explore each of them for your own.

50 things to do in Jaipur

A tourist city in every respect, Jaipur also forms the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan .  Historically, the city was built in the 18th Century by Sawai Jai Singh, and today finds its place as a part of the ‘touristic’ Golden Triangle of India (Agra, Delhi and Jaipur .)

It houses several attractions to visit, as well as forms a stepping stone for tourists visiting the desert-cities of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer , as well as Udaipur . (All three of them being fantastic tourist destinations in the Indian state of Rajasthan)

Today Jaipur is one of the fastest developing Indian cities, whilst maintaining its historical past and its cultural heritage; a modern metropolis as well as a touristic centre .  It offers a unique experience in the midst of the Thar Desert, to any visitor coming to have a memorable time in Jaipur.  From the chaotic and busy streets, to the relatively calmer historical evidences; Jaipur has a lot to offer, and this part of the book makes an attempt to capture it all in the form of ‘50 thing to do’ in Jaipur.

So, here goes the list.

1.  Visit the Amer Fort

The fort is perched atop a hill, about 11km from the main city of Jaipur.  It is a must visit site, known for its artistic Hindu site elements; and not to forget its prefect picturesque location, overlooking the Maota lake .  Images of the fort below.

The fort complex is divided into four courtyards, with each offering its own unique experiences.  The first courtyard houses the Sila Devi temple .  The second courtyard has the Diwan-i-Aam (hall of public audience.)  The third courtyard has the private quarters of the king, amongst other structures and landscaped garden.  The fourth courtyard is surrounded by the building complex where the Zenana (royal family women) lived.

Also try: Walking on the Fortification Walls in and around the palace.  It feels like India’s very own “Great Wall of China”-like experience.

2.  Sheesh Mahal (Hall of mirrors)

It is the most famous structure in the Amer Fort complex.  The Sheesh Mahal is laden with mirror mosaics and coloured glasses, and forms a brilliant “jewel box” , in almost any kind of light.  Image below.

3.  Sila Devi Temple

Located inside the Amer Fort, it is a small but elegantly decorated temple.  It is dedicated to Sila Devi who is an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali or Durga .

4.  Kesar Kyari Garden and the Mahota Lake

A garden landscaped in royal style, sitting along the lake and giving a brilliant view of the entire fort.

5.  Jaigarh Fort

It is the oldest amongst the historical buildings in Jaipur, and sits on the Aravalli ranges, just 1km away from the Amer Fort .  This place becomes a wonderful one if you get to visit it during rains.  Historically it formed the army base for the king, housing a canon factory as well as world’s largest cannon, which goes by the name of Jaiwaan Cannon .

The fort sits at the highest point of the mountain, and gives a panoramic view of the city from the top.  Image of the fort (from inside) below.

6.  The Great Wall of Jaipur

As I talked about earlier, the Fortification wall atop the hill, which forms a part of the Jaigarh Fort as well as the Amer Fort ; and its strong resemblance to the “Great Wall of China.”  Image of the Jaipur fortification below.

7.  Jantar Mantar

It is a marvellous monument complex which houses a collection of 19 architectural astronomical instruments .  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and houses the world’s biggest sundial. (Also, it forms the cover image of this book, hence a “must visit” !)

Interesting Fact: There are 5 Jantar Mantar complexes in India, this being the largest.  The other ones are in New Delhi, Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura .

8.  Hawa Mahal

It is a screen full of windows, and is built in red and pink sandstone, sitting on the edge of the City Palace .  The Hawa Mahal (or the “Palace of Winds” ) has 953 small windows complete with intricate latticework.  The original purpose of the lattice was to allow the royal ladies to observe everyday life on the streets outside, without being seen.  Image below.

9.  City Palace

It lies in the same ‘locale’ as the Hawa Mahal and the Jantar Mantar.  The Jaipur Maharaja (part of the royal family) lives in this palace till this date, but the public areas of the palace are open to tourists.  It is a pretty beautiful and a vibrantly decorated palace, as the images below depict.

Word of advice: Apart from the entry fee to the palace, people might try to take various fee, etc.  Entering Chandra Mahal , getting a photograph clicked, would cost more; and you can pay if you want to, but I found it a bit too overpriced for my taste (Rs. 2000 for entering Chandra Mahal .)

10.  The buildings of City Palace

The city palace houses many interesting buildings to see which includes:

- The entrance gates.

- Mubarak Mahal.

- Chandra Mahal.

- Pritam Niwas Chowk.

- Diwan-i-Khas (private audience hall).

- Diwan-i-Aam (public audience hall).

- Maharani Palace.

- Govind Dev Ji Temple.

11.  Nahargarh Fort

Another Fort in the Jaipur City Area, offering expansive views of the city.  This historic fort is perhaps the best place to get a view of the entire city (example in the image below.)  Also, the fort has some beautiful architecture (as seen in the second image below.)

12.  Open Theatre, Nahargarh Fort

Do check out this weirdly shaped open air theatre at Nahargarh Fort .

Location: 26.941183 N, 75.816436 E.

13.  Panna Meena Ka Kund

It is a stunning piece of architecture, a step-well located near the Amer Fort in Jaipur.  Climb down the stairs, and try and use the same ones to come back up. (A challenge claimed by locals that not everyone can complete.)  Image of the step-well below. (The steps run all around.)

14.  Anokhi Museum

A 16th Century Haveli turned into a museum, the place is located near ‘Panna Meena Ka Kund.’  It is a well-presented museum that shows the history of Indian textile, “who make what and how?” everything is available in this museum.

Also See: Kheri Gate in the Fort wall, right next to the museum.

15.  Boat to the Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal (literally translating into “Water Palace” ), is located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake.  The trip to the Jal Mahal is a dual experience.

Firstly one moves to the beautiful Floating Palace , with the hills forming a backdrop.  The boats that take you to Jal Mahal were carefully crafted in Rajput style by the boat makers in Vrindavan .

Secondly, on reaching the Jal Mahal ; and climbing its stairs onto the first floor level, one is taken right to the beautiful and fragrant Chameli Bagh .  Image of the Jal Mahal below.

16.  Gaitore ki Chhatriyan

It also goes by the name “Royal Gaitor Tombs”.   The site is a royal cremation ground, with lots of royal cenotaphs built showing a perfect blend between Islamic and Hindu architecture.  Unlike other heritage sites in Jaipur, Royal Gaitor Tombs are not crowded, and forms the perfect place to relax with friends or family.  Image below (Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh chhatri )

The quite place: Entry Fee Rs. 20, even for foreigners.  And no one is going to try and sell you anything here, so you can just sit and enjoy the quite resting place .

17.  Garh Ganesh Temple

It is located near the Royal Gaitor Tombs, on the hills.  The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, and was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, before he established Jaipur.  The temple appears to have a fortified exterior, in continuation to the fort walls that it forms a part of.

18.  Dovind Devji Temple

The beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Krishna is located near the City Palace and Jantar Mantar .

19.  Birla Temple

It also goes by the name of Laxmi Narayan Temple sometimes, and is one of the many Birla temples located in the country.  The temple showcases some impressive architecture in its white palace-like structure.  Image below.

20.  Moti Doongri Fortress

The small fort located near the Birla Temple , gives the imitation of a Scottish fort .  The fort is not as big as the previously mentioned forts, and a small visit along with the Birla Temple would do; it wouldn’t take much time, and is well within the main city.

21.  Galta Ji Temple

It is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, and hence also goes by the name “Monkey Temple.”  It is located right outside the main city limits, towards the East.  The temple features a number of pavilions with rounded roofs, carved pillars as well as painted walls.  Images below.

22.  Akshardham Temple

It is located in Vaishali Nagar locality, and has many added features including a film shows and boat rides.

23.  Sisodiya Rani Bagh

It is a palace garden towards the hills in the east.  The site contains tiered multi-levelled gardens with fountains, water channels and pavilions at each level.  The top of the garden terrace is occupied by a two-storeyed palace.  It is a beautifully landscaped place in Jaipur, and according to me, a “must-visit” as well.

Location: 26.899335 N, 75.859152 E.

Also see: Vidyadhar ka Bagh, and other garden complexes in the vicinity.

24.  Jagat Shiromani Ji Temple

It is a Hindu temple, showcasing some brilliant architecture as well as a fascinating gateway entrance, carefully and intricately decorated by stone-carving.

Location: It is located near Amer Fort, just north of it.  26.988910 N, 75.851198 E.

25.  Jain Mandir, Sanganer

The beautiful Jain temple is located 15km south of the city centre, and about 6km from the Jaipur Airport.  There are several myths about the temple like; the statues that are housed in the temple, were found beneath the temple itself.

26.  Albert Hall Museum

It is much more than just a museum; it is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture.  It is also the oldest museum in Jaipur, and functions as the state museum as well.  Image below.

Also See: Ram Niwas Bagh , the garden in which the building is situated.

27.  Jaipur Zoo

A place for children and adults alike, the Jaipur zoo includes 53 species of animals including mammals, birds and reptiles.  It is located in the same area as the Albert Hall Museum . (Ram Niwas Bagh)

Note: The zoo remains closed on Tuesdays.

28.  Catch a play at Ravindra Manch

An Auditorium complex in the Ram Niwas Bagh Area, which showcases several plays throughout the year.  Catch a play at the Ravindra Manch auditorium, or the open air theatre.

29.  An evening walk at Central Park

It is located near Sawai Jai Singh circle , and is a well landscaped lush green space, perfect for an evening walk.  It is well connected to the public transport and located in the green centre of the city.

Note: There are a lot of places to see, and things to do nearby, making this my favourite locality in the Jaipur City area .

30.  Jaipur Golf Course

It is an 18-hole lush-green golf course for the golf enthusiasts out there.  Located right next to the Central Park, this golf-course remains open throughout the year.

31.  Birla Planetarium and Birla Auditorium

Located in the same vicinity as the Central Park, and the Golf course; the Birla Planetarium is a fun place for kids, families as well as those fascinated by planets and stars.  One can also check for and catch a play at the Birla Auditorium, next to the Planetarium building.

32.  Rambagh Palace Hotel

This unique building used to be the palace for the Maharaja (King) of Jaipur, and today, it has been transformed into a beautiful luxurious hotel.  If your budget permits, do try living in the royal walls of this hotel for a while, and feel like a king.  Image of the landscaped courtyard below.

33.  Vidhan Bhawan

It is a magnificent building with a huge dome, where the State Legislative Assembly meets.  It finds its place in the book, mainly because of its amazing architecture and landscaped gardens around, where one can just sit for a while and admire the beauty and magnificence of the building.  Image below.

34.  Man Sagar Lake

The lake in which the Jal Mahal sits, is an incredible man-made reservoir built in 1610 by King Man Singh I.  It is a beautiful sight to see (image below).

Also available: Horse riding, Camel riding and Elephant riding on the shore.

35.  Jal Dhara Garden

This is a nice little garden located on the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg .  It is not exactly a touristy place, but a nice little spot with a decent amphitheatre that I and my friends discovered on our tour to Jaipur.

Location: 26.869554 N, 75.809035 E.

36.  Jawahar Kala Kendra

Also located on the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, this is one of the most happening art and cultural centre in Jaipur.  It has an auditorium frequented by a large number of people to watch the plays, as well as a nice coffee house.  If you’re an art-savvy person, you’ll like the place.  It has sculptures, paintings, photography and many other forms of arts.

37.  Enjoy the Jaipur Puppet Show

Enjoy the traditional puppet shows of Rajasthan , with a nice story and Indian folk music to go along with it.  This can be enjoyed at various places in Jaipur.  I experienced this on a highway dhaba (restaurant) some 20km away from Jaipur, and it was a joyful experience to have along with a sumptuous dinner.

38.  Jaipur Literature Festival

It is the world’s largest “free” literary festival, with Nobel laureates as well as famous authors coming and giving speeches for everyone to attend.  The festival is a melting pot for every writer in the country, as well as thinkers and dreamers.  If you’re visiting Jaipur in January, do catch the festival held every year.

Next Festival Dates: 19th to 23rd January, 2017. (Since I know you’re interested in books and reading, and maybe you’ll even catch me there!)

39.  Experience royal luxury at Rajmahal Palace hotel

If you can loosen your purse a little, you can stay at one of the many luxury hotels in Jaipur, including the Sujan Rajmahal Palace Hotel“Live life, king size.”

The minaret pierces the city skyline and is located near the City Palace.  One can climb his way up to the top of the minaret, for a magnificent view of the city.  Image below.

41.  Rajmandir Cinema

Catch a Bollywood film in this classic ornately decorated art deco movie theatre, which looks like a large pink birthday cake from the outside.

42.  Take a RTDC Jaipur tour

These include full-day tours (9am to 6pm), half day tours (8am to 1pm, 11.30am to 4.30pm, 1.30pm to 6.30pm) as well as night tours.  I personally prefer the Pink City by Night tour which costs around Rs. 450, departing at 6:30 PM and includes dinner at Nahargarh .

Tours depart from: Jaipur Train Station, as well as RTDC hotels.

43.  Ride the Jaipur Metro

Take a brief ride on the Jaipur Metro and experience the city from an elevated level, whilst enjoying the comforts of the air-conditioned space.  Watching busy Indian cities through its elevated mass transit systems is something that I’ve always admired.

44.  Rambagh Polo Ground

Maharaja Man Singh II had a passion for polo, hence this magnificent polo ground right next to Rambagh Palace .  Even when there is no match going on, you can catch the exhibition matches and practice sessions usually held every evening from 4 PM to 6 PM.

Polo Season: From January to March.  A ticket to a match would also get you in the lounge area adorned with historic photos and memorabilia.

45.  Experience the traditions at Chokhi Dhani

It is an ethnic village in Jaipur, made to replicate the traditional style of living in a Rajasthani Village .  It showcases every colour of Rajasthan’s ethnicity in a festive mood throughout the year.  So if you’ve missed a particular festive season in Jaipur, just go to Chokhi Dhani , where the festive mood stays alive all year long.  Apart from eating some delicious Rajasthani food, it offers various other amenities.

Other attractions: folk music and dance performances, health club, swimming pool and spas.  You can even watch the famous Rajasthani puppet show here.

The entire area of the old city of Jaipur is surrounded by fortified walls, which is 6 metres high and around 3 metres thick.  There are various gates present as well, like the Ajmeri Gate, Surajpole, Chandpole. Different regions of India celebrate various unique festivals and Jaipur (Rajasthan) is no different.  Enjoy the various festivals of Jaipur, when the whole city lights up in festive mood.  Some of these are Teej Festival, Ganagur Festival, Elephant Festival (during Holi ), Diwali , etc.

49.  Amer Fort Light and Sound show

The show takes place in the Amer Fort , with voice narration by the famous Indian actor, Amitabh Bachchan .  The show tells about the history, culture and life of Amer in a spectacular manner.

50.  Escape from Jaipur, travel around

Apart from the city itself, Jaipur offers tremendous sights to see and places to visit in all four directions.  It also acts as a stepping stone to further destinations of Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer ; in Rajasthan .  If you’ve got a private vehicle you can definitely see a lot of other things around Jaipur , which people would otherwise miss.  Some of these include Abhaneri , and its famous step-well (around 80 km away from Jaipur); Pushkar & Ajmer (around 130 km away from Jaipur), etc.  Images given below (Abhaneri and Pushkar respectively.)

20 things to do in Jaisalmer

The city of Jaisalmer is located on a ridge of golden-yellow sandstone, in the midst of the Thar Desert in India.  The city is also nicknamed as “the golden city.”   The city is crowned by the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort , which forms a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title “Hill Forts of Rajasthan.”

There are shops, hotels and age old havelis (homes) inside the fort area where families have lived for generations.  This makes the living fort of Jaisalmer different from the other forts of the country.

Due to its location in the heart of the Thar Desert , it is one of the prime cities to experience the beauty of the Thar Desert in the country. (Through various ways like dune bashing, camel rides, etc.  This makes it a tourist destination, along with the nearby cities of Jodhpur and Udaipur, in Rajasthan.

This book takes an effort to uncover some of the Jewels of the city of Jaisalmer, in the form of ‘20 things to do’ in Jaisalmer.  So, enjoy the list to a point where you can’t just read anymore, and you just “HAVE TO” go to the golden city and experience it all with your own eyes.

1.  Jaisalmer Fort

It also goes by the name of the Sonar Qila (or the Golden Fort .)  Unlike most forts in India, this one is a living fortress; with shops, hotels and families living here since centuries.  Apart from the incredible architecture and culture that one can find in the fort complex; one must also visit this complex for some of the best sunset views in Rajasthan.

Considered to be the most fascinating landmark of the city, no trip to Jaisalmer would be complete without a visit to the fort.  A walking tour of the fort takes visitors around the various corners of the fort, from artisan shops to temples present within the fort premises.  An image of the Fort with the city in the background, given below.

2.  Roam around the streets of the “Golden City”

Jaisalmer isn’t known as the “golden city” for nothing.  Take a walk through the narrow lanes of the city, and you’ll get to witness some amazing sights, showcasing some of the finest examples of traditional Indian detailing in golden-yellow sandstone.  One of the images (of the sights that you’ll get to see) below.

3.  Boating at Gadsisar Lake

Being the only lake in the city, it happens to be a popular boating spot.  It is surrounded by tombs and temples, and provides a ‘watery’ relief in an otherwise arid climate.  The lake is also interspersed with structures such as stone chattris , and provides a unique boating experience.  Images below.

Also See: Tilon Ki Pol , which is the entrance gateway that leads to the boating zone.

Also See: A view of the Jaisalmer Fort in the distant background.

4.  Shop a little at the many touristic handicraft street shops

Unlike the big cities of Rajasthan, like Jodhpur and Jaipur which have their population in millions; Jaisalmer is a relatively small touristic town with a population of about 80,000 people.  Many of those people have to move to bigger cities of Rajasthan in search of jobs in the off season, and hence try to make as much of their livelihoods from tourism while they can. (In the four months that sees the tourist season – November to February.)

Some of the things that you can buy in Jaisalmer are traditional Rajasthani clothes, silver jewellery, silk and cashmere, etc.

Note: Be sure to bargain.  One of the essentials in India, which I’ve mentioned time and again in my previous books as well.  The original asking price that the shopkeepers demand could be anywhere between 200% and 600% of what they’ll be ready to sell the product for after a bit of bargaining.

5.  Visit the Jain Temples

Jaisalmer houses many Jain temples; and seven of those lie within the walls of the fort.  Visit these intricately carved temples, and appreciate the beautiful architecture that they have to offer.  Images below.

Note: It is mandatory to remove your shoes and all articles of leather clothing, including your belts, before entering a Jain Temple.

6.  Patwon ki Haveli

Jaisalmer houses many havelis (mansions), a series of which belonged to the sons of a wealthy merchant.  These are located about a 10 minute walk from the gates of the fort.  Patwon ki Haveli has been restored beautifully and turned into a museum for tourists.  Be prepared to spend up to an hour over there.  Image below.

7.  Salim Singh ki Haveli

Located near the Jaisalmer Railway Station , Salim Singh’s Haveli is one of the most famous in Jaisalmer.  It is built on the remains of an older Haveli and offers a unique feature.  The haveli is smaller at the lower levels and extends as overhanging balconies at the upper level.

The front façade of the Haveli seems to resemble the stern of a ship and is also referred to as Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace) sometimes.  Image below.

Some interesting trivia: It is said that Salim Singh tried to match the height of the Jaisalmer Fort but this was unacceptable to the ruling king and the additional floors were knocked down.  Also, since there aren’t a lot of evidences to support this rumour, it could just be a myth.

8.  Enjoy a camel ride through the desert

Jaisalmer is perhaps the best place in the country to enjoy the Great Indian Thar Desert.  Be sure to experience a camel safari on your visit to the city.  The safari will take you on camel rides across the sand dunes, in the heart of the Thar Desert .  Image below.

9.  Shop at Shree Lakshmi Art Home

The shop is located in the main city of Jaisalmer, and showcases a variety of touristic things which includes Rajasthani turbans , pashmina wool clothes, scarves, Ali Baba trousers, etc.  If you don’t know what to buy, you could always try and see how a Rajasthani turban would look on you.  Image of a kid wearing a Rajasthani turban below.

Also try: wearing some ethnic, traditional Indian clothing for both men and women.

10.  Buy jewellery at the Jewel Caravan

It is a beautiful shop offering some of the best traditional jewellery of Rajasthan.  Located in the Sadar Bazaar area of the city, it offers a brilliant collection of bracelets, bangles, rings, necklaces, anklets, etc amongst other items.

11.  Experience an off-road Dune-bashing adventure in the desert

One of the most exciting activities that one can do on a tour to Jaisalmer is dune-bashing, i.e. riding a jeep through the sand dunes of the Thar Desert .  Due to the city falling in the heart of the desert, there are plenty of dune-bashing opportunities right outside the main city limits.  Image below.

Tip: Do carry a scarf or something to cover your face, as it is going to be a sandy adventure.

12.  Try parasailing over the desert

This is another fun and adventurous activity that you can try over the Thar Desert around Jaisalmer.  You can get a chance to be trained by professionals and enjoy an amazing view of the dessert from high up in the air.  To add to that, you get to take an amazing as well as a thrilling experience back home.

Approximate Cost: About Rs. 600 per person.

Also try: Para-motoring over the sand dunes of Jaisalmer.  It includes a huge fan that will propel you forward, so that you can embrace the breeze whilst enjoying a mind-blowing view from above.  Cost: About Rs. 2300.

13.  Camp in the desert

This type of camping is different from camping in the woods or the hills, and offers a really unique experience.  The camps are located a few kilometres away from the main city, in the peaceful surroundings of the desert.  Staying in one of these camps provides a solace and a rejuvenation of the mind.  Image below.

Located around 15 kilometres away from the city of Jaisalmer is the abandoned village of Kuldhara .  It now lies in the state of ruins, but could intrigue the minds of fellow travellers into imagining the life in this brilliantly planned town.  There are several legends that have been formed about this abandoned village, one of them given below.

Interesting story: According to a legend, the minister of the ruling kingdom was an evil man and he wanted to marry the young daughter of the village chief.  He forced for their marriage to happen and gave a deadline to the village chief.  Scared, the village chief invited a meeting with the other 84 chiefs of the neighbouring villages.  It was then decided that the entire population of the Kuldhara village would leave, to protect the honour of the chief’s daughter.

20 things to do in Udaipur

Historically, the city of Udaipur formed the capital of the kingdom of Mewar.  It is known for its history, culture, scenic locations and the Rajput-era palaces that can be found in the city.

Also known as the ‘city of lakes’ , Udaipur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Indian state of Rajasthan.  It is one of the most picturesque tourist destinations in Rajasthan, and has even formed the setting of many movies, including the James Bond film, Octopussy.

Besides being known as the ‘city of lakes’ , Udaipur also has many other things to offer.  Magnificent palaces, intricately carved temples and spacious havelis are a few amongst those.

This book takes an effort to uncover many of the Jewels of the city of Udaipur, in the form of ‘20 things to do’ in Udaipur.  So, enjoy the list to a point where you can’t just read anymore, and you just “HAVE TO” go to the city of lakes (also referred to as the ‘White city’ and ‘Venice of the East’ ) and experience it all with your own eyes.

1.  City Palace Complex

A fusion of the Rajsthani and Mughal styles of architecture, this magnificent palace complex has been standing since 400 years and was added upon by the various rulers of the dynasty, starting from Maharana Udai Singh II .  It gives a panoramic view of the city, which includes views of the Lake Palace in Lake Pichola , the Jag Mandir , as well as the Monsoon Palace .

The palace complex has been built entirely in granite and marble, and sits in the picturesque backdrop of rugged mountains.  It is amongst the prime tourist destinations in the city of Udaipur and includes several must see structure.  Images of the city palace below.

3.  Lake Pichola

If there is one place that forms the “image” of the city of Udaipur, it is Lake Pichola.  This beautiful 4km long man-made lake has invited countless tourists over the years, and houses 2 islands namely Jagniwas and Jagmandir .

Things to do: Boating in the Lake.

4.  Lake Palace

Sitting on the Jagniwas Island in the Lake Pichola , the Lake Palace forms one of the most romantic spots in the city of Udaipur, with the Aravalli hills forming the perfect backdrop.  Even if the place is out of your budget, you should definitely take a heritage visit to the Lake Palace, now managed by the Taj group of hotels.

An image showcasing the intricacies in the detail of the palace, given below.

Approximate Cost: Rooms starting from Rs. 30,000 per day.

5.  Jag Mandir (Temple)

It is situated on the second island of the Lake Pichola .  An intricately built temple palace complex, it is adorned by large elephant statues welcoming people to the beautifully landscaped island, which was used by the royal family to hold parties, around 300-400 years ago.  Image below.

6.  Fatehsagar Lake

Another great lake of Udaipur, it is connected to the Pichola Lake by the means of a canal.  A boat ride in this magnificent lake is a must, as it takes you to the three islands situated within the lake.

Also see: Nehru Park, which is located on the largest island in the Fatehsagar Lake.

7.  Udaipur Solar Observatory

The Udaipur Solar Observatory is also located on a tiny island in the midst of the Fatehsagar Lake .  It is one of the best solar observatories in the country and was modelled on the design of the Solar Observatory in the Big Bear Lake in Southern California ; favourably surrounded by a water body, forming a great atmosphere for solar observations.  The water on all four sides also means that the only way to reach the observatory is by a boat, which adds to the adventure part of it.  It is surely worth a visit, especially for the ‘space’ fans.  Image below.

8.  Bagore ki Haveli

One of the most attractive places to see in Udaipur, this palatial Haveli is located on the shore of the Lake Pichola ; hence offering a brilliant view.  The massive structure acts like a live museum, giving a peek of the royal lives of the Maharajas and Maharanis (kings and queens.)

Must see: The traditional music and dance performance at the Haveli in the evening.

9.  Saheliyon ki Bari

It literally translates into “The Courtyard of the Maidens.”  It is located in the northern part of the city of Udaipur, and forms an exquisite place which was built for the maids who accompanied the Princess to Udaipur (perhaps as a part of the dowry settlement.)  Historically it was the place where the maids could sing, dance, and indulge in recreational activities.  It is a great, well-landscaped spot to visit in the city.

10.  Ahar Cenotaphs

These are a group of cenotaphs, dedicated to the Maharajas of Udaipur.  It forms the royal burial site for the city of Udaipur and offers a splendid array of intricately carved out chattris , made from fine craftsmanship out of stone.  It is one of my favourite peaceful places to be in the city.  Images below.

14.  Vintage and Classic Cars Museum

A haven for vintage car lovers, this museum showcases some of the best examples of vintage cars, which formed a part of the collection of the Maharaja.  These cars have all had a certain amount of interesting history attached to them too.  For example, a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom, which was used in the famous James Bond movie, Octopussy ; or the Cadillac convertible which escorted Queen Elizabeth II to the airport in 1961.  According to me, this place is a must visit for car-buffs and history-buffs alike.  Image below.

15.  Mansapurna Karni Ropeway

It is a popular tourist attraction in the city, and is enjoyed by almost all the visitors to the city of lakes .  The cable car operates between two mountain tops, located on the banks of the Lake Pichola.  The aerial views from the Gondolas are some of the best that you’ll see in Udaipur.

16.  A Hot-air Balloon trip over the city

19.  Kumbhalgarh Fort

It is located about 70 km North-west of the city of Udaipur, and forms one of the most exciting escapes from the city.  It forms a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site under the heading, “Hill forts of Rajasthan.”  The fort forms one of the major tourist destinations around Udaipur, and is spectacularly lit for a few minutes every evening.  The best way to visit the fort and its componential buildings is to take a taxi (or a private car) from Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh .  Image of the fort below.

Also see: Banashankari Temple, Jain Temple, Vedi Temple, Yagya Mandir, Topkhana, Badal Mahal, Golerao Temple; all within the fort boundary.

Also see: the light and sound show at the fort.

20.  Enjoy a perfect evening at the Gulabh Bagh (Rose Garden)

The large garden complex is the perfect place to spend a nice peaceful evening, after a day full of touring and discovering the city of lakes .  It was laid out by Maharan Sajjan Singh in 1881, and also houses a small library in the garden complex.

Other attractions that form a part of this magnificent garden include; a small zoo, a toy train, as well as the Navlakha Mahal .  Image of the garden complex below.

My experience: My last visit to the city of Udaipur was a short one, spanning just 2 days.  I remember coming to this garden after 2 hectic days, and ending my trip on the most peaceful notes.  Hence, I’ve decide to end the book in the same way as I ended my trip, with a visit to this garden complex.

20 things to do in Jodhpur

Historically, Jodhpur was built as a new capital for the state of Marwar (in the year 1459 AD).  The ruins of the previous capital (Mandore) can be seen in the Mandore Gardens , just outside the city of Jodhpur.

Jodhpur, also goes by the name of the Blue city , for the colour of houses in the old city area. (As can be seen in the image below)

Apart from that Jodhpur forms one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Indian state of Rajasthan and is known for its palaces, temples, havelis, forts, spices, fabrics, handicrafts, etc.  This book takes on an attempt to uncover some of these, in the form of ‘20 things to do’ in Jodhpur.

It is one of the largest and the best preserved forts in India.  The Mehrangarh Fort sits atop a hill, about 410 feet above the rest of the city, and is also known as the Jodhpur Fort .  The huge vertical fort walls are the reason that it has been able to defend itself over numerous victories over the history of this fort.

Inside the boundaries of the imposing thick walls, there are grand palaces, complete with intricate detailing and beautifully landscaped gardens.  An image below shows the aerial view of the Mehrangarh Fort along with the entire city of Jodhpur in the background.

5.  Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The lake also has an option of boating, and the boating experience is truly wonderful here.  It is a place for nature lovers, with restaurants around it, and a chance to spot foreign migratory birds, like the Siberian cranes , who come here during the winter season.  Image of a part of the beautiful longitudinal lake below.

The shopkeepers won’t shy away from showing you every item that they have in their market.  They’ll literally (actually I mean figuratively) turn their shops out to show you everything.
