My mom drinks about 2 to 3 cups of green smoothie every day. She has the first cup before her morning exercise classes because the protein from the flax or hemp seeds, along with the complex carbohydrates from all the ingredients, help sustain her energy level. She drinks the rest throughout the day. She uses different combinations of green leafy vegetables and fruits on a regular basis to be sure she’s getting the health benefits of a variety of nutrients throughout the week.
4–5 leaves kale, bottom stems removed
1-inch piece ginger, peeled
1 medium apple, cored and halved
½ cup blueberries
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (about ¼ lemon)
2 tablespoons flax seeds
3 tablespoons ground hemp seeds (optional)
Place all ingredients and 3 cups water in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
