To encourage new growth, cut back by about one-third after the plant is done flowering for the season. (Though see below about the toxic sap.) Most spurges are quite drought tolerant, and most love sun, but some types do well in shade.
There are more than 2,000 kinds of these tough, easy-to-grow plants. Some euphorbias love sun, while others love shade; some are drought tolerant, and others prefer more moisture. Euphorbia polychroma (shown here) is known as cushion spurge for its domeshaped growing habit.

The milky white sap is a deterrent to deer and other pests (and it can be irritating to skin, so wear gloves and wash immediately if you come in contact with it) Spurges are an excellent inclusion in rock gardens.
