The Borden murders are to the United States what the Jack the Ripper murders are to England. They are the two most celebrated, investigated, and unsolved mysteries in the annals of crime….There is one pivotal difference between the Ripper murders and the Borden tragedy. There is no question that Jack, whoever he was, was the murderer stalking London's East End slums. In the Borden misadventure, even after a hundred years of microscopic examination, there is no agreement among the masters of crime as to who it was who wielded the hatchet that dispatched Andrew and Abby Borden to premature graves. Popular conception is guided by the ancient doggerel that says Lizzie Borden, youngest daughter of Andrew, took an axe to them, but just as every shred of evidence indicates this to be true, those same shreds prove she did not; could not. The Borden mystery is thus pristinely unique in the archives of mayhem, set apart from all other murders wherein the question is only whether X did it, or was it Y or X. The contradictions in the evidence have nagged aficionados since the fourth day of August in 1892
