"You pigeon-livered ratbag!" Nicolaus flung himself at Bryce, knocking him to the center of the room. "How dare you take advantage of my sister?"
"Nicolaus…" Bryce held his hands up and tried to explain, but Nicolaus was having none of it.
He let fly with a right hook that knocked the larger man to the floor. Bryce grunted when Nicolaus landed on him, straddling his hips and temporarily driving the breath from his chest.
"Nicolaus! Stop it!" Grace screeched, grabbing her brother's upraised arm in both hands and trying to stop the next blow from falling. "He's done nothing to me!"
Nicolaus struggled against her for a moment as her words sank in. Then he lowered his arm and looked from the man beneath him to his sister and back again.
"Someone needs to explain," he growled down at Bryce. "No sooner had Father and I arrived back from town than Mother and Lord Eadwald were both caterwauling in his ears about you having compromised Grace."
"Yes, well, there was a situation," Bryce admitted hesitantly. "Perhaps you could climb off me, and we could discuss it like rational beings?"
Nicolaus looked down again, seeming surprised to realize he was straddling the earl, his arse rubbing against the other man's crotch, all in full view of his sister and Bryce's maiden aunt. He bit back an oath and climbed awkwardly to his feet before hesitantly offering Bryce a hand up.
