Later I sat on the subway, the lone rider in the early morning, deep underground, where the sun could not shine on me even as it rose. I tried desperately to imagine a scenario that could return Phil to me.

Hello, Phil
You know, I thought that when it came time to write this part of the book that I would have so much to say. But here I am, at this point having written more than two hundred thousand words in the unedited version of this book, then more words to patch the holes in this edited version. And it’s not that I’m losing steam (there are days where I think I could spend the rest of my life working on just this book, could drop dead at a holographic keyboard some indeterminate time in the future with the ending still—always—a page away), but more that I’ve realized I have so little to say.
So, here we are, you and I. We’re at the end.
