For Deborah Orr
Days are counted
Night was cloudless
Pleasant dinners
By all lights and at all hours
Pace up
Small sounds carried far
Can’t see what harm it would do
Stared at each other pretty fixedly
Laboured to relieve suffering
Strain of gaiety
Weeping like a woman or a lost soul
Ecstasy of listening
Here is another lesson to say nothing
Last ingredient required
Startling blasphemies
This creature stealing like a thief
Asleep, dreaming and smiling
In the last months of the year
Ill-contained impatience
He drew near
One of these rambles
Much exercised and nourished
Might indeed be possible to cover my face
Never heard of him
The appearance of a friend
Hearty, healthy, dapper, red-faced
Mauled the unresisting body
Chief of sufferers
Not fitting language
A hissing intake of the breath
Delighted me like wine
Sought with tears and prayers
To the great, dark bed
Devil had been long caged
Turn sick and white with the desire to kill him
Plentiful springs of distress
I have brought on myself a punishment
Leave her screaming
Recall me to myself
Time awfully fails me
I shall sit shuddering and weeping in my chair
