During Taekwondo class, Cade walks up to his instructor and says. “Mr. Steve, I’m having a problem with someone at school.”
“What kind of problem, Cade?” Mr. Steve asks.
“Jason, one of the boys in my class at school, says if I don’t quit talking to Gabby during recess, he’s going to hit me,” Cade replied.
“Does Jason know that you and Gabby are good friends and take Taekwondo lessons together?” Mr. Steve asks.
“No, sir. He says Gabby is his girlfriend, and if I don’t stop talking to her, he’s going to hurt me,” Cade says.
“What does Gabby have to say about this?” Mr. Steve asks.
Cade replies quickly, “Gabby says she doesn’t like him, and she’s not his girlfriend.”
Gabby is listening and says, “Jason is just a big bully, Mr. Steve.”
“Well, Cade, as a Guardian of Peace, you should do everything to keep from fighting,” Mr. Steve says.
Mr. Steve thinks for a moment then says, “Tell Jason that Gabby is just a good friend. He might stop his bullying.”
“What if he doesn’t care that Gabby is my friend? What if he still wants to fight?” Cade asks.
“Hmm. Why don’t you talk to Olivia,” Mr. Steve says. “She was bullied at your age. Maybe she can give you some advice.”
“Miss Olivia,” Cade says, “I am being bullied at school. Mr. Steve says, you can help me.”
Cade explains the situation to Olivia, who says, “Jason is jealous of your friendship, Cade, especially since Gabby doesn’t like him.”
“What can I do, Miss Olivia?” Cade asks.
“Why don’t you make an effort to be his friend?” Olivia says.
“What if he is super mean? What if he says, I don’t need you as a friend?” Cade answers.
Olivia replies, “You won’t know until you try, Cade. Is there something you both like to do during recess?”
Cade says, “Well, we both like to play football.”
“That’s a good starting point. Play football with Jason and see how it goes,” Olivia says.
“Olivia is right, Cade. Plus, it’s an excellent example of being a Guardian of Peace and trying to avoid a fight,” Mr. Steve says.
It’s time for kicking drills, so Mr. Steve stands up and says, “Who wants to practice kicking?”
“I do,” says Cade as he runs to the kicking bag, performs a perfect roundhouse kick, and shouts. “Kiap!”
