Stories are 'source books' based upon historical records by Alexandre Dumas pere, senior, before 'the elder', D'Artagnan, or Monte Cristo. Prior, the rising dramatist, fashion and literary lion had 'Crimes Celebres' published in Paris 1839-40. Eight volumes comprised 18 titles here translated.

Instant success brought letters from every province in France about more violent deeds. He chose subjects of both historic and dramatic importance. Modern readers may see semi-lawlessness across Europe during the middle ages, of Borgias, Cenci, Urbain Grandier, and Marchioness of Brinvilliers or Ganges.
