The heroine of the story, Lesbia Ferrars, attends Kingfield High School and when her parents die, she is looked after by a step-brother. When he and his family emigrate to Canada, Lesbia is to be taken with them. But before the ship embarks, she runs away to stay with a friend so that she can continue her studies at Kingfield.
