Electra and Other Plays (Penguin Classics)

This volume contains four plays by Sophocles (496-496 B.C.), was the first to give ancient Greek drama I structure recognizably related to its modern descendants. In Electra he objectively presents part of the Orestean legend, while Woman of Trachis is remarkable for the human verisimilitude imparted to a near-repulsive piece of mythology. Philoctetes portrays the struggles of right against might, and Ajax takes for its theme that of the great man fallen.
