About The Author
James Fenimore Cooper (1789 –1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days. He attended Yale University and served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman which influenced his work. While he is remembered for historical novels such as the Leatherstocking Tales, he was a naval historian of considerable integrity.
Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans.
He was ordered to Lake Champlain to serve aboard a gunboat and later assigned to the USS Wasp. Aboard this ship Cooper met his lifelong friend William Branford Shubrick. Cooper would later dedicate The Pilot, The Red Rover, and other writings to Shubrick.
