Section I
Backgrounds for Teaching Music

Teaching music to children is an exciting challenge. This section provides backgrounds on what elementary school children can learn about the elements of music as they actively engage in singing, listening, playing instruments, creating, and moving to music. The world is full of wonderful music and sharing the wide variety with children is a delight. Included in a chapter in this section is information about everything from classical music to jazz. Many different approaches to teaching music are used in today's schools and learning about these ideas will provide an excellent background in preparing to teach. Updates are offered in the latest technology, reaching all learners, making curricular connections, and the importance of prekindergarten music learning. Finally, strategies for planning and assessing music learning are offered.
