The large and ever-popular Stripsenjochhaus makes an obvious destination for a walk (see Route 63). Built upon a saddle in the ridge separating the Kaisertal from the Kaiserbachtal, it has remarkable close, full-on views of the major cliffs and summits of the Wilder Kaiser mountains. This approach walk is neither difficult nor overly demanding, and is highly recommended.
Note Should it be your intention to spend a night at the hut, you are strongly advised to telephone ahead to ensure a place (tel 05372 62579).
Follow directions for Route 69 as far as Griesner Alm (1½hrs). At the path junction near the head of the valley, where you would otherwise cross the stream to reach Alpengasthof Griesner Alm, ignore that branch and, remaining left of the stream, keep ahead where the path rises through mostly deciduous woodland. About 25mins from the Griesner Alm junction another path breaks to the left for the Fritz-Pflaum Hut, but we continue ahead, climbing in and out of woodland, then above the trees with a wild scene of rock and scree to the left – the Steinerne Rinne, a massive stone chute between towering walls of limestone (see Route 64). With a few switchbacks the trail then comes onto the saddle with the Stripsenjochhaus (accommodation and refreshments) standing a few paces to the right.
