Often visited from Filzmoos, the summit of the Rötelstein is another noted vantage point with a splendid panorama. Standing south of the main Dachstein massif, it commands a wide vista, not only of the Dachstein, but the continuing line of the Northern Limestone Alps in the west, and southwest to the Grossglockner and Venediger groups.
Follow directions for Route 76 as far as the path junction in the valley’s upper pastures at the head of the stony track (30mins). Take the path signed for the Sulzenhals. This continues ahead across the pasture, then swings left up an easy slope to reach the 1825m saddle of Sulzenhals in another 30mins. This saddle, visited on Route 73, is on the ridge which divides the Bachlalm valley from the Hinterwinkl above Filzmoos.
Turn left (south) here and climb the steepening ridge (caution) to gain the 2247m summit of the Rötelstein with its large cross and remarkable panoramic views.
Note While the suggestion here is to return to Bachlalm by the path used on the approach, an alternative continuing route crosses the summit and descends to Filzmoos via the Ahorneggalm and Rettenstein Hut.
