In Chapter 3, we identified talent processes as an important driver of People Equity. These processes can be thought about in terms of their role in managing the entire talent lifecycle — beginning with the attraction and acquisition of talent to initial hiring processes to maximizing performance to retaining or perhaps recovering the best talent. In this section, I will discuss the talent lifecycle and how it can be optimized using an ACE lens (see Figure IV.1).

The talent lifecycle and risk of talent process sub-optimization will be discussed in Chapter 9. This presentation will be followed in Chapter 10 by the Talent Acquisition side of the lifecycle — building an employer brand and acquiring talent. Chapter 11 will address getting to high performance, beginning from day-one onboarding and training to performance maximization. Chapter 12, the last chapter in this section, focuses on talent processes for the future: leadership development and succession, and talent retention and recovery. If you find yourself wanting more on a particular talent phase, take a look at Reinventing Talent Management, where entire chapters are devoted to some of the stages of the talent lifecycle, such as talent acquisition, performance management, onboarding and acculturation, leadership, and retention.
