Lace-Edged Cardigan with Collar

FINISHED SIZE

Shown in 54" (137 cm) circumference at lower edge.

YARN

About 655 yd (599 m) of worsted-weight (Medium #4) yarn.

We used: Naturally Merino & Fur (70% merino, 30% possum fur; 131 yd [120 m]/50 g): #03 red, 5 skeins.

NEEDLES

Capelet—Size 9 (5.5 mm): 24" (60-cm) circular (cir). Front bands—Size 8 (5 mm): straight or cir. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS

Open-ring markers; tapestry needle; three ⅞" (2.2-cm) buttons.

GAUGE

16 sts and 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st.

STITCH GUIDE

Arrowhead Lace: (multiple of 8 sts + 1)

Row 1: (RS) *K1, yo, k2, sl 1 knitwise (kwise), k2tog, psso, k2, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.

Rows 2, 4, and 6: Purl.

Row 3: *K2, yo, k1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k1, yo, k1; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 5: *K3, yo, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2; rep from * to last st, k1.

Repeat Rows 1–6 for pattern.

CAPELET

With larger cir needle, CO 84 sts. Do not join. Work in St st and use open-ring markers to mark raglan “seam” sts as foll: (RS) K15 for left front, mark next st, k10 for left shoulder, mark next st, k30 for back, mark next st, k10 for right shoulder, mark next st, k15 for right front. Purl 1 row. Inc row: (RS) *Knit to marked st, M1R (see page 52), k1 (marked st), M1L (see page 52); rep from * 3 more times, knit to end—8 sts inc’d. Purl 1 (WS) row. Rep the last 2 rows 9 more times—164 sts. Work inc row every 4th row 6 times, ending with a WS row—212 sts. Knit 1 (RS) row, then purl 1 row inc 5 sts evenly spaced to accommodate lace patt repeat—217 sts. Beg with the next row (RS), rep Rows 1–6 of arrowhead lace patt (see page 57) until piece measures 15" (38 cm) from CO, or ¾" (2 cm) less than desired total length, ending with Row 5 of patt. Knit all sts for 5 rows. BO all sts kwise.

FINISHING

Left front band: With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit about 68 sts (alternate picking up 3 sts for every 4 rows and 2 sts for every 3 rows) along left front edge. Work garter st for 5 rows. BO all sts. Mark placement of 3 buttons, one ½" (1.3 cm) below neck edge, one even with the beg of the lace patt, and the other one centered between the first two.

Right front band: Work as for left front band, but work 3 buttonholes (k2tog, yo) opposite markers on 3rd row of band.

Collar: (Note: RS of collar is WS of capelet.) With larger cir needle and RS of capelet facing, pick up and knit 85 sts evenly spaced around neck opening, excluding front bands. Use open-ring markers to mark center st of each shoulder section. Next row: (RS of collar, WS of capelet) Knit. Next row: (WS of collar, RS of capelet) K2 (edge sts, knit every row), purl to last 2 sts, k2 (edge sts, knit every row). Inc row: (RS) * Knit to marked st, M1R, k1 (marked st), M1L; rep from * once more, knit end—4 sts inc’d. Work 1 (WS) row even. Rep the last 2 rows 3 more times—101 sts. Cont even, maintaining 2 edge sts each side in garter st, until collar measures 1¾" (4.5 cm) from pick-up row. Maintaining edge sts as established, work center 97 sts in arrowhead lace patt until Rows 1–6 have been worked 2 times, then work Rows 1–5 once more. Work all sts in garter st for 3 rows. BO all sts kwise. Weave in loose ends.

Sew buttons to left front band, opposite buttonholes.
