APPLES

When fall approaches, I think back to my family’s annual apple-picking trips to the local orchard. We’d gather bushel after bushel, eating more apples than any doctor would probably recommend. Afterward, we’d order pizzas and settle in for a long evening of apple pie making. To be honest, I think I did more of the eating than the making because my sister is the one who is skilled in the art of patience and pastry. These days, while I have a foolproof apple crisp recipe, I especially love to use apples in unexpected savory ways—chipotle apple guacamole, apple radish slaw, and veggie ceviche.
