The NOOK Tablet has an extremely good high-resolution screen, ideally suited for viewing photos and playing video. As with music and audio files, you’ll first have to get them on your NOOK Tablet via email (Handling Other Attachments), downloading from the Web (Tip), or transferring them from your computer (Transferring Files to Your NOOK Tablet).
Once you’ve got them on your NOOK Tablet, you view them using the built-in My Media app. To launch it, press the NOOK button, tap Apps, and then tap My Media.
You can also browse the photos and video files on your NOOK Tablet manually, and then view any that you choose. To do that, in the Library, tap “My stuff”→My Files and tap My NOOK or Memory Card, depending on where you’ve stored the files. Assuming that you’ve stored your music files in the Pictures folder, tap My Files→Picture. If you’ve stored your videos in the Videos folder, tap My Files→Videos. Then browse to any file and tap any to play it. The My Media app launches and starts playing the file.
The My Media app opens into the Grid view, which shows you all your pictures and videos in a neatly spaced arrangement. Flick through them to see them all. It displays both photos and videos; videos have a small rightward-facing arrow on them.
Tap a photo to view it. For a moment, you’ll see not just the photo, but also a row of icons across the bottom of the screen for doing things with the photo—cropping it, setting it as your wallpaper, and more. After the icons go away, you can make them come back by tapping the middle of the photo. When they’re onscreen you can make them go away by tapping the middle of the photo again.
Some photos display better horizontally than vertically, so turn your tablet 90 degrees, and the orientation changes. Turn it back if you want to view the photo vertically. To view the next photo in the Gallery, tap the right side of the screen; to view the previous one, tap the left side. To return to the Grid view, tap the middle of the screen to bring up the icons, and then tap Grid at top right. When you’re in the Grid view, tap Picture to see the last photo you were viewing.
When you’re in Picture view, here’s what you can do by tapping any of the icons across the bottom of the screen:
Slideshow. Plays a photo slideshow, displaying each photo for a few seconds before moving on to the next. Stop the slideshow by tapping the screen.
Wallpaper. Sets the current photo as your NOOK’s wallpaper. When you tap, a movable highlighted box appears inside your photo, representing the portion of the photo that will become your wallpaper. Move the box around until you’ve got the part of the photo you want to use as your wallpaper, and then tap Save. Tap Discard if you change your mind. When you tap Save, the cropped photo now appears as your Home screen’s wallpaper. (To change your wallpaper back to the previous one, or to another photo, see Changing Your Wallpaper.)
Crop. Tap this option, and a highlighted box appears onscreen. Drag any side of it, and arrows appear that let you select the portion of the photo you want to save. Tap Save to crop the photo to its new dimensions, and tap Discard to leave your photo in its original uncropped condition.
Left. Rotates the photo to the left 90 degrees. Each time you tap it, it rotates 90 more degrees.
Right. Rotates the photo to the right 90 degrees. Each time you tap it, it rotates 90 more degrees.
Delete. Removes the photo from your NOOK.
If you tap a video instead of a photo, it starts running in a video player. You’ll see the usual controls for playing, pausing, and moving through the video. Tap the screen to make the controls disappear; tap again to bring them back.
Table 10-2. The NOOK Tablet can view and play many but not all picture and video formats.
