Tapestry Garden

Nicky Epstein

In this colorful Folk Art-inspired masterpiece, Nicky Epstein has worked a narrow Fair Isle border along the hem before launching into bold intarsia flowers accented with bobbles and embroidery. The back and fronts are worked separately, the knitted motifs are embellished, and the pieces are seamed along the sides. To give the floral motifs an impressionistic look, Nicky put the finished piece through the cycle in her washing machine. The purchased fur collar adds a touch of aristocratic elegance, but a knitted wool or chenille collar (see page 142), with a pom-pom tie, would work just as nicely.

NOTES

  • The charts are worked in stockinette-stitch intarsia. Use a different length of yarn for each color section and cross yarns at the color changes to prevent holes from forming.
  • The back shares the same charts as the fronts. The right half of the back is worked according to the Left Front chart, and the left half of the back according to the Right Front chart. The back uses only the intarsia motifs outlined in blue; the rest of the back is worked using the main color.
  • Embroidered details are worked after the pieces have been completed and assembled, but before felting.
  • Bobbles are worked separately and attached during finishing. Work the bobble squares on the chart using the background color, then follow the chart as a guide when attaching the bobbles. You may also mark each bobble position with a removable stitch marker or scrap yarn as you come to it.

Transfer the capelet to a basin of icy cold water and agitate again. Rep from * until the wool has felted sufficiently, checking finished measurements against schematic frequently.
