CHEVRON

DIFFICULTY:

If you came to my house, you’d definitely notice a few chevrons here and there. What can I say? I love the pattern, so I just had to try a string art version. For this project, I kept it to two simple sections, but you can use this basic shape in so many ways. Make multiple copies and connect them if you want to fill a larger space. Simply trim the pattern down and connect the dots on the vertical ends. (A useful thumbtack trick is shown in the Triangle Tiles project on page 88.)

Materials

Pine board: 1" × 10" (2.5cm × 25.5cm), cut to 12" (30.5cm) long and stained (Shown: Minwax Water-Based Wood Stain in Island Water)

58" (1.6cm) silver nails

Embroidery floss in 2 colors (Shown: DMC 3845/Medium Bright Turquoise, 964/Light Seagreen)

Size 10 crochet thread in 1 color, for border (Shown: Navy blue)

Photocopy of pattern (page 24)

Picture-hanging hardware

2 felt furniture pads

Tools: Hammer, needle-nose pliers

Basic supplies: Superglue, scissors, transparent tape, ruler

Techniques Used

Preparing a board (page 8)

Applying a nail pattern (page 9)

Stringing basics (pages 1011)

Double-wrap technique (page 13)

Finished Size (h × w)

12" × 9.5" (30.5cm × 24cm)

  1. You won’t necessarily need to trim this pattern from the paper like usual, as the paper’s edges can help you center it on your board. One of my tried-and-true ways to roughly center a pattern is to place your pattern all the way to the left of the board and measure the distance from the right side of your board to the right side of your pattern edge. Divide that distance in half and you know how much space should be on each side. Tape your pattern down once you are happy with its position.
  2. Hammer through your pattern as usual and remove.
  3. Tie on (securing your knot with glue) and outline the edges of each shape.
  4. Fill the shape as usual, with a random zigzag pattern. If you are doing multiple colors like I did, it’s nice to do the colors in the same order for both shapes. I unwrapped the entire skein of floss, stretched it across the room, folded it in half, and cut. Then I did half a skein of each color, in each shape, in the same order. Tie off and glue your knots.
  5. I went ahead and added a double-wrap border in navy blue to really make it shine.
  6. Attach your picture-hanging hardware to the upper back and pads to the lower back, sign it, date it, and that’s a wrap! Little string art joke there…
