On a sunny day, there's always touristic Nyhavn, although prices are higher and the best places are away from the water.

Save your caffeine fix for Copenhagen's most respected micro-roastery. The beans here are sourced ethically and directly from farmers. These guys usually offer two espresso blends, one more full-bodied and traditional, the other more acidic in flavour. If espresso is just too passé, order a hand-brewed cup from the Kalita Wave dripper. There are three other outlets, including in Nørrebro and Frederiksberg.
oBastard CaféCAFE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %42 74 66 42; https://bastardcafe.dk; Rådhusstræde 13; hnoon-midnight Sun-Thu, to 2am Fri & Sat; g1A, 2A, 9A, 14, 26, 37)
A godsend on rainy days, this hugely popular, super-cosy cafe is dedicated to board games, which line its rooms like books in a library. Some are free to use, while others incur a small 'rental fee'. While away the hours playing an old favourite or learn the rules of a more obscure option.
And if you think this place is reserved for dateless geeks, think again: young, single hipsters flock here to slurp coffees and beers, roll the dice and scan the crowd for potential dates.

From organic Veneto Prosecco to Puglian Negroamaro, guests are encouraged to sample the day's rotating offerings before committing to a glass. Wines start at a very palatable 55kr and come with a small complimentary serve of Italian nibbles.
From Thursday to Saturday, the bar's upper floor hosts proper aperitivo sessions, where vino is offered with bites like couscous, Italian cheeses and salsiccia (sausage).

Politicians and well-versed oenophiles make a beeline for this canal-side wine bar, its enviable cellar stocked with classic European vintages, biodynamic wines and more obscure drops. With modernist Danish design and friendly, clued-in staff, its string of rooms lend an intimate, civilised air that's perfect for grown-up conversation. Discuss terroir and tannins over vino-friendly nibbles like olives, cheeses and smoked meats.

Head in before 11pm for a bar seat at this dark, luxe lounge. Named for the local postcode, its cocktail repertoire spans both the classic and the revisited. You'll also find a fine collection of whiskies, not to mention an older 30- and 40-something crowd more interested in thoughtfully crafted drinks than partying hard and getting wasted.
oRubyCOCKTAIL BAR
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %33 93 12 03; www.rby.dk; Nybrogade 10; h4pm-2am Mon-Sat, from 6pm Sun; W; g1A, 2A, 14, 26, 37, 66)
Cocktail connoisseurs raise their glasses to high-achieving Ruby, hidden away in an unmarked 18th-century townhouse. Inside, suave mixologists whip up near-flawless, seasonal libations created with craft spirits and homemade syrups, while a lively crowd spills into a labyrinth of cosy, decadent rooms. For a gentlemen's club vibe, head downstairs among chesterfields, oil paintings and wooden cabinets lined with spirits.

Coffee snobs weep joyfully into their nuanced espressos and third-wave brews at this snug, light-filled cafe. Bespectacled owner Niels tends to his brewing paraphernalia like an obsessed scientist, turning UK- and Swedish-roasted beans into smooth, lingering cups of Joe. If you're lucky, you'll score the cosy back nook, the perfect spot to browse Niels' collection of photography tomes.
JaneCLUB
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.thejane.dk; Gråbrødretorv 8; h8pm-late Thu-Sat; g5C, 6A, 14, 150S, 350S, mNørreport, bNørreport)
With its plush armchairs, chesterfield sofas and soundtrack of jazz and blues, you'd be forgiven for thinking your name is Don Draper. But it probably isn't and you're definitely not on the set of Mad Men. You're at Jane, a hotspot, speakeasy-style bar with craft cocktails and a craftier bookshelf. As the night progresses, watch it open to reveal a hidden dance floor.
BankeråtBAR
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %33 93 69 88; www.bankeraat.dk; Ahlefeldtsgade 27; h9.30am-11pm Mon & Tue, to midnight Wed-Fri, 10.30am-midnight Sat, 10.30am-8pm Sun; W; g37, 5C, 350S, mNørrebro, bNørrebro)
A snug spot to get stuffed (literally), kooky, attitude-free Bankeråt is decorated with taxidermic animals in outlandish get-ups – yes, there's even a ram in period costume. The man behind it all is local artist Filip V Jensen. But is it art? Debate this, and the mouth-shaped urinals, over a local craft beer (a much better choice than the very average wines).
Living RoomCAFE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %33 32 66 10; www.facebook.com/thelivingroomdk; Larsbjørnsstræde 17; h9am-11pm Mon-Thu, to 2am Fri, 10am-2am Sat, 10am-7pm Sun; W; g5C, 6A, 10, 14, mNørreport, bNørreport)
Spread over three levels and decked out in vintage decor and a Moroccan-themed tea room, the aptly titled Living Room is a super-cosy (albeit often busy) spot to settle in with a speciality coffee, tea, homemade smoothie or lemonade. Cocktails and other alcoholic libations are also served late into the evening.

The bar also offers food-and-pétanque packages (from 270kr), combining 90 minutes of play with selected offerings from the kitchen.

One of the oldest bars in Copenhagen, Hviids Vinstue has been putting a wobble in people's steps since 1723. The interior is a suitably brooding combo of dark timber and leather. The place is famous for its gløgg (Danish mulled wine). Production begins in May, with the bar's annual gløgg season starting at 11am on 11 November, just in time for the biting Danish winter.
The bar also serves traditional smørrebrød.

The air may no longer be thick with tobacco, but the intriguing conversations continue at this unapologetically old-school drinking den. A traditional hit with journalists, writers and politicians, it draws an older local crowd, here to catch up, debate, play chess or tap their fingers to free live jazz, the latter usually offered once a month on Sunday (check the website for dates).
Copenhagen is one of the world's most gay-friendly cities. Highly inclusive festival Copenhagen Pride takes place in August, and LGBT film festival Mix Copenhagen hits screens in October. Useful websites include www.out-and-about.dk, www.lgbt.dk and (in English) http://rainbowbusinessdenmark.dk.
Many of the LGBT-specific cafes, bars and clubs are located in the Latin Quarter and just off Rådhuspladsen in the city centre.

In the shadow of Rådhus, this friendly corner cafe-bar remains the most popular gay in the village. There's food for the peckish and a healthy quota of eye-candy locals and out-of-towners of all ages. In the warmer months, its alfresco tables are packed with revellers with one eye on friends, the other on Grindr.

Friendly, attitude-free and particularly popular with an older male crowd, this small, themed bar promises plenty of penal action, with uniformed 'guards' and willing guests. Skip the mediocre restaurant upstairs.
Many locals avoid the touristy bars lining Nyhavn, instead buying their liquor from small, seasonal convenience store Turs Havneproviant ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %33 13 40 47; Lille Strandstræde 3; g1A, 26, mKongens Nytorv) and drinking it by the canal.

Don't be fooled by the name: dark, wood-panelled Eiffel Bar is a red-blooded Danish dive bar, and all the better for it. The joint dates back from 1737, when it was a hit with local sailors. The beer here is cheap, with all the standard local brews available on tap, plus a few Danish craft ales. A solid choice for an animated, amiable, old-school vibe.

8Getting Around
We can't stress enough that by far the best way to see Copenhagen is on foot. There are few main sights or shopping quarters more than a 20-minute walk from the city centre.
Copenhagen's bus, metro (%70 15 16 15; www.m.dk), S-train (www.dsb.dk) and Harbour Bus network has an integrated ticket system based on seven geographical zones. Most of your travel within the city will be within two zones. Travel between the city and airport covers three zones.
The cheapest ticket (billet) covers two zones, offers unlimited transfers and is valid for one hour (adult/12 to 15 years 24/12kr). An adult with a valid ticket can take two children under the age of 12 free of charge.
If you plan on exploring sights outside the city, including Helsingør, the north coast of Zealand and Roskilde, you're better off buying a 24-hour ticket (all zones adult/12 to 15 years 130/65kr) or a seven-day FlexCard (all zones 675kr).
Alternatively, you can purchase a Rejsekort (www.rejsekort.dk), a touch-on, touch-off smart card valid for all zones and all public transport across Denmark. Available from the Rejsekort machines at metro stations, Central Station or the airport, the card costs 180kr (80kr for the card and 100kr in credit). To use, tap the Rejsekort against the dedicated sensors at train and metro stations or when boarding buses and commuter ferries, then tap off when exiting. Only tap off at the very end of your journey – if your journey involves a metro ride followed immediately by a bus ride, tap on at the metro station and again on the bus, but only tap off once you exit the bus.
The Copenhagen Card gives you unlimited public transport throughout the greater region of Copenhagen (including the airport). In addition, you get free entrance to 79 attractions and museums as well as discounts on several restaurants, sights, rentals and more.
Another option is the City Pass (www.citypass.dk), which covers all bus, train, metro and Harbour Buses in zones 1 to 4 (adult 24/72 hours 80/200kr, children travel half-price). You can purchase the City Pass online and receive it as a text that can be used immediately.
Whether you're hankering for sandy beaches, modern art collections or an alfresco museum showcasing the more bucolic side of Danish history, Copenhagen's city fringes have you covered. Internationalists can even head abroad for the day: Sweden's third largest city, Malmö, is an effortless 35-minute train from Copenhagen Central Station via the majestic Øresund Fixed Link bridge and tunnel. (Just don't forget your passport!)

FrilandsmuseetMUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %41 20 64 55; www.natmus.dk; Kongevejen 100, Lyngby; h10am-5pm Tue-Sun late Jun–mid-Aug, shorter hours rest of year; g184, 194, bSorgenfri)F
The main sight of interest in the Lyngby area is Frilandsmuseet, a sprawling open-air museum of old countryside dwellings that have been gathered from sites around Denmark. Its 100-plus historic buildings are arranged in groupings that provide a sense of Danish rural life as it was in various regions and across different social strata.
Frilandsmuseet is an 850m signposted walk from Sorgenfri station, a 25-minute train journey from Central Station on S-train line B. You can also take bus 184 or 194, both of which stop at the entrance.
oLouisianaMUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.louisiana.dk; Gammel Strandvej 13, Humlebæk; adult/student/child 125/110kr/free; h11am-10pm Tue-Fri, to 6pm Sat & Sun)
This extraordinary museum of modern and contemporary art should be high on your 'to do' list even if you're not normally a gallery-goer. Along with its ever-changing, cutting-edge exhibitions, much of the thrill here is the glorious presentation. A maze-like web of halls and glass corridors weave through rolling gardens in which magnificent trees, lawns, a lake and a beach view set off monumental abstract sculptures (Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Barbara Hepworth etc), making them feel like discovered totems.
It's hard to predict exactly which pieces from the gallery's huge, stellar collection will be on display. Such is the quality and breadth that even works by Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon stay in storage much of the time. There's a better chance of seeing pieces by Alberto Giacometti and prominent Danish artist Asger Jorn, but rotations every two months or so mean that there's always more to discover. Kids are spoilt with an entire section of their own, where they can create masterpieces inspired by the gallery's exhibitions, using everything from crayons to interactive computers. And an evening program often includes art lectures and live music (typically Fridays). Great cafe and shop too.
Louisiana is in the pretty coastal town of Humlebæk, 30km north of Copenhagen. From Humlebæk train station, the museum is a 1.5km signposted walk northeast. Trains to Humlebæk run at least twice hourly from Copenhagen (92kr, 35 minutes) but if you're day-tripping, the 24-hour Copenhagen ticket (adult/child 130/65kr) is much better value. Hourly bus 388 from Helsingør stops right outside Louisiana (36kr, 17 minutes) and continues in half an hour to Rungsted, where it passes the Blixen museum.
Karen Blixen MuseetMUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; http://blixen.dk; Rungsted Strandvej 111; adult/child 75kr/free; h10am-5pm Tue-Sun May-Sep, 1-4pm Wed-Fri, 11am-4pm Sat & Sun Oct-Apr)
Best known as the writer of (and Meryl Streep character in) Out of Africa, Karen Blixen grew up in a 400-year-old coaching inn at Rungsted. She returned here from Africa in 1931 bankrupt, heartbroken and suffering heavy-metal poisoning…then started to write. The house remains much as she left it, full of period furniture but also photographs, Masai spears, personal mementoes and two rooms of her remarkably impressive paintings.
The visit to the main house starts every half-hour with a 10-minute introductory talk. While waiting for that, you can look around the biographical room and library of Blixen's books that sit above the ticket desk and cafe. Once inside, there's also a 12-minute video presentation, and each of the seven rooms has a bilingual descriptive info-card. The wooded grounds behind, set aside as a bird sanctuary, contain Blixen’s grave, a simple stone slab beneath a large beech tree around 350m west of the house. You'll pass it if you take the short-cut route to the Rungsted Kyst train station (route map and directions available from the museum).
Charlottenlund is a salubrious coastal suburb with a sandy beach, around 8km north of central Copenhagen. Access is via S-train line C to Klampenborg, which itself has a handy beach (Bellevue) that gets packed with summer sunbathers.

OrdrupgaardMUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %39 64 11 83; www.ordrupgaard.dk; Vilvordevej 110, Charlottenlund; adult/child 110kr/free; h1-5pm Tue-Fri, from 11am Sat & Sun; g388, bKlampenborg, then)
An extension by the late architect Zaha Hadid put Ordrupgaard on the international map, but this petite art museum, housed in an early-20th-century manor house north of Copenhagen, has always had an enviable collection of 19th- and 20th-century art. The museum will be closed for two years from December 2017 as it builds an underground extension by prolific Norwegian architects Snöhetta. During this time, the museum's art park, which features site-specific installations by renowned contemporary artists, will remain open.
DyrehavenWALKING, CYCLING
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; http://eng.naturstyrelsen.dk; Dyrehaven, Klampenborg; bKlampenborg)
Formally called Jægersborg Dyrehave, Dyrehaven is a 1000-hectare sweep of beech trees and meadows crisscrossed by an alluring network of walking and cycling trails. Now the capital's most popular picnicking area, the grounds were established as a royal hunting ground in 1669. There are still about 2000 deer in the park, mostly fallow but also some red and Japanese sika deer. Among the red deer are a few rare white specimens, descendants of deer imported in 1737 from Germany, where they are now extinct.
Den Blå PlanetAQUARIUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %44 22 22 44; www.denblaaplanet.dk; Jacob Fortlingsvej 1, Kastrup; adult/child 3-11yr 170/95kr; h10am-9pm Mon, to 5pm Tue-Sun; g5C, mKastrup)
Designed to look like a whirlpool from above, Copenhagen's aluminium-clad aquarium is the largest in northern Europe. The space is divided into climatic and geographic sections, the most spectacular of which is 'Ocean/Coral Reef'. Home to swarms of Technicolor tropical fish, the exhibition features a massive 4-million-litre tank brimming with sharks, stingrays and other majestic creatures. If possible, visit the aquarium on a Monday evening when it's at its quietest and most evocative.
Arken Museum of Modern ArtMUSEUM
(Ark; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; %43 54 02 22; www.arken.dk; Skovvej 100, Ishøj; adult/child 115kr/free; h10am-5pm Tue & Thu-Sun, to 9pm Wed; bIshøj)
Modern art fans wanting a quick escape from town should consider a trip to Arken. It's best known for its temporary exhibitions, spanning the usual modern art spectrum of site-specific installations, sculpture, painting and mixed-media works. The museum's permanent cache of post-1945 works include creations by Warhol, Damien Hirst and Ai Weiwei, as well as art by heavyweight Danes like Per Kirkeby, Asger Jorn and Olafur Eliasson. There's plenty to keep children intrigued too, including the wonderful sandy beach outside.
To get here from Copenhagen, take the S-train southwest to Ishøj station. From here, you can either catch bus 128 to the museum (five minutes) or walk (2.4km).
