Wherever you are on your NOOK Tablet, it’s easy to get anywhere else. Press the NOOK button, and voilà, the Quick Nav bar appears. It pops up over whatever else you’re doing. You can then use the Quick Nav bar to hop to wherever you want to go on your NOOK.
Here’s what each of the buttons on the Quick Nav bar does:
In late 2011 and early 2012, the NOOK Color was automatically given a software update that made it look and work almost identically to the NOOK Tablet. Before the update, the NOOK button didn’t make the Quick Nav bar appear, for example, and instead brought you to the Home screen. There were many other differences as well. Your NOOK Color should have automatically updated to the newest software. If it didn’t, what you see on it may differ slightly from what appears in this book. To manually update your NOOK Color to the latest software, turn to Cleaning Your NOOK’s Screen.
Home. Heads you to the Home screen (Home Screen) with all its features, such as the Daily Shelf (The Daily Shelf) and any books, magazines, or newspapers you’ve put on the Home screen.
Library. Tap and you go to your Library (Using the Library to Manage Your Books and Periodicals), which has all your books and magazines.
Shop. Takes you to the Barnes & Noble NOOK Store (Browsing and Searching for Books in the NOOK Store), for buying books, periodicals, and apps.
Search. Tap to launch the NOOK’s very nifty search feature, which performs a global search all of your books, magazines, newspapers, and files. It also has a little bit of extra searching magic, and searches the Web and the Barnes & Noble NOOK Store.
Apps. Shows you all your NOOK’s built-in apps, such as Contacts, Email, Netflix, Hulu Plus, NOOK Friends, plus any apps you’ve downloaded.
Depending on when you bought your NOOK Color, it may or may not have come with the Netflix app. Before the late 2011 and early 2012 NOOK Color update, the NOOK Color couldn’t run this app, and so it wasn’t included. If your NOOK Color lacks the Netflix app, you can download it for free from the NOOK Store. As of this writing, Hulu Plus doesn’t work on the NOOK Color, but it may by the time you read this. To find out, search for Hulu Plus in the NOOK Store. If it shows up as available, you can download and use it. If not, you can’t.
Web. Opens up the NOOK’s browser so you can surf the Web. (See Chapter 12 for details.)
The Web button in the Quick Nav bar may be have a banner with the word “Disabled” across it, and the button itself may be grayed out. If that’s the case, access to you your NOOK browser has been blocked. Some people do that if they worry about their children browsing the Web unattended. It’s easy to enable access again. For details, see Disabling the Browser.
Settings. Tap to change every single setting on your NOOK, including your WiFi network settings, the sounds, security options, screen brightness, Reader settings, and plenty more.
