APPENDIX D

CREDIT OUR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Whenever the Canadian military moves into action abroad, photographers and videographers go with them as often as possible to document unfolding events. These specially trained professionals are themselves members of the Canadian Armed Forces. They live among their comrades and share in their adventures through both calm and combat. Each scene they capture tells a unique story, and over time their images form a collection that speaks volumes about the nature of missions such as those we undertook in Afghanistan. Housed within the Department of National Defence, the archive of their work is a rich resource for all students of history. And in books such as this one, even a small collection functions as a narrative all its own. As we researched this book, our longstanding appreciation for these photographers was deepened yet again. While the credit they receive here is just the simple phrase DND Combat Camera, we proudly salute these men and women for their sense of duty, strength of character, and mastery of art.
